Proud to be an American?

This is one of those holidays we're I'll start hearing “I’m proud to be an American” voiced by many.

Perhaps it's my inner curmudgeon but…..

I'm not proud to be an American.

I was born and raised in America. I have benefited from many of the opportunities and resources available here. While things certainly aren't perfect, they're far better than many parts of the world.

So why don't I say that I'm proud to be an American?

There are a few that have sweated, toiled, bled, and even laid their lives on the line to build and protect this country.

I am not one of them.

I have benefited greatly by their efforts and sacrifices but not paid the price myself.

Oh, I've whined and complained about various problems and inequities, but like most I've done very little about them.

When all is said and done, what have I done to lay claim to the word “proud” in relation to America?

Like so many people, I am blessed to be an American.

I will not dishonor the few and claim that I am proud to be an American.
